Whole-farm GHG estimation and environmental diagnostics platform
The COMET GLOBAL project is designed to improve methods for quantifying greenhouse gas sources and sinks in agricultural systems and in national inventories.
The aims of the consortium are aligned with the aims of the Global Research Alliance for harmonised methods for estimating GHG emissions, with national priorities for reducing GHG emissions in each of the partner countries.
The development of the system will be based on COMET Farm, a tool already available on Internet and used in the United States. Spatial data (climate, soil, land management), GHG soil and non-soil emission factors specific to each country will be integrated into several widely used models (RothC, ECOSSE and DayCent). The user interface will be multilingual (English, French, Spanish, German and Italian).
The project is being undertaken by an international consortium coordinated by Colorado State University (USA) with European and Australian partners.
The project is funded in the framework of the European Joint Programming initiative on Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change (FACCE-JPI).
The FACCE-JPI initiative brings together 22 countries who are committed to building an integrated European Research Area addressing the interconnected challenges of sustainable agriculture, food security and impacts of climate change. The funding for the French teams (Inra, Infosol and UMR Eco&Sols) is provided by the French Research Agency (ANR).
