Who, When, Where
Siobhán Staunton has spent most of her career at INRA first in Versailles and since 1990 in Montpellier after her MA in Chemistry and DPhil in Soil Science at Oxford and post-doctoral research at Oxford and imperial College, London. She is currently Associate Editor of European Journal of Soil Science, Soil Research and Pedosphere and Chair of Commission 2.5 (Soil Chemical, Physical and Biological Interfacial Reactions) of the IUSS (International Union of Soil Sciences).
Research interests
After working for many years on the fate of radionuclides, then briefly on the reactions of trace metals in soil, my research interests are now focused on the consequences of the interactions between proteins and soil organo-mineral surfaces.
The proteins I study include phosphatases and the putative Glomalin Related Soil Protein (GRSP) with beneficial roles in soil and others with potentially negative effects such as the Bt-toxin produced by Bacillus thuringiensis used in biopesticides and by genetically modified crops with the Bt trait and the prion the infectious agent responsible for transmissible spongiform encephalopathies.
